Maintenance

Inspection Checklist for Site Managers

Use this four-tier inspection schedule to keep your playground safe and compliant year-round.

Daily Visual Check

  • Walk the entire playground and visually inspect all equipment
  • Look for obvious damage: broken parts, cracked plastics, splintered timber
  • Check for foreign objects: glass, syringes, animal waste
  • Ensure surfacing is not displaced or compacted in high-traffic zones
  • Check that gates and perimeter fencing are intact and functional
  • Remove any litter, debris, or hazardous materials immediately

Weekly Operational Check

  • Test all moving parts: swings, spinners, seesaws, rocking equipment
  • Check all fasteners, bolts, and anchoring points for tightness
  • Inspect rope elements for fraying, knotting, or wear
  • Test handrails and guardrails for stability
  • Check EPDM or rubber surfacing for tears, lifting edges, or delamination
  • Inspect drainage areas around equipment footprints
  • Verify equipment labels and age/capacity signage are legible

Monthly Detailed Inspection

  • Inspect all structural connections and welded joints
  • Check for corrosion on metal components, particularly at ground level
  • Measure surfacing depth in critical fall zones (if loose fill)
  • Test impact attenuation properties of surfacing if wear is visible
  • Inspect foundations and anchor points for movement or erosion
  • Check timber components for rot, fungal growth, or pest damage
  • Verify all access restrictions (for age-inappropriate areas) are in place
  • Document findings and actions taken

Annual Professional Inspection

  • Engage a qualified playground safety inspector for SS 457 and EN 1176 audit
  • Full structural integrity assessment including load testing where required
  • Impact attenuation testing of safety surfacing (HIC measurement)
  • Entrapment and entanglement dimension verification
  • Comprehensive written inspection report with risk ratings
  • Action plan for identified defects with priority classification
  • Update maintenance records and compliance documentation
  • Review and renew any manufacturer warranties that may require inspection
