EN 1177 Explained: Impact Attenuating Surfacing for Singapore Playgrounds. EN 1177 is the standard for impact attenuating playground surfacing — the cushioning layer that helps protect children from fall injuries. This guide explains the standard, technical concepts, and surfacing materials. ## What Is EN 1177? EN 1177 specifies the requirements, test methods, and performance criteria for surfaces used beneath and around playground equipment. The objective is to reduce the risk of serious head injuries from falls by ensuring surfacing materials absorb impact energy effectively. ## Key Technical Concepts ### Free Fall Height (FFH) Free Fall Height is the maximum height from which a user could fall from a piece of playground equipment. It is determined by the equipment design according to SS 457 and EN 1176. ### Critical Fall Height (CFH) Critical Fall Height is the performance rating of a surfacing material. The surfacing's CFH must be equal to or greater than the equipment's FFH. ### Head Injury Criterion (HIC) HIC is a measure of head impact severity. EN 1177 requires that surfacing materials maintain a HIC value below 1000 when tested at the relevant fall height. ## Surfacing Materials and Costs ### EPDM Rubber Wetpour EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber wetpour is a popular playground surfacing in Singapore, consisting of rubber granules bound with polyurethane to form a seamless surface. Pricing for EPDM starts from SGD 90/sqm, while playground equipment starts from SGD 350/sqm. Safety certification starts from SGD 600. ### Loose-Fill Materials Materials like rubber mulch, wood chips, and sand can provide impact attenuation but require regular maintenance to ensure adequate depth and distribution. ## Compliance Testing Surfacing compliance is verified through impact testing according to EN 1177. This can be conducted through laboratory testing of material samples or on-site testing for installed surfaces to verify performance. ## Common Surfacing Compliance Issues Compliance issues often include insufficient material depth for the equipment FFH, substrate failure, UV degradation, edge lifting, and inadequate drainage.
